Mission to the Complexo de Maré
This past week I accompanied AmSoc member, Anna Whyte, and the InC on her mission to the Complexo de Maré to deliver birthday cakes, sodas and hot dogs so that the August birthday kids could have a party, which otherwise would have been unlikely. A festive holiday party held at the US Marine House Saturday afternoon was enjoyed by all, young and old. Candy apples and genuine peppermint candy cane flown in from the States were on hand for the kids as well as delicious eggnog for the adults.

On a picture perfect Tuesday morning, several members of the American Society, embarked on a tour of Brazilian landscape architect, Roberto Burle Marx's, estate which encompasses approximately 100 acres and 3,500 species plants.
The Second American Society Pancake Breakfast (in Barra)
Saturday morning's Pancake Breakfast at EARJ - Barra was AmSoc's second this year and just as well attended and enjoyed. Again the weather collaborated gloriously and the setting in the Barra was warm and welcoming.

2010, April 17th Pancake Breakfast at OLM
No one in Rio would dream of getting up early on a weekend unless they were trying to avoid the crowds on the bicycle and running track that run parallel to the beach. American Society Pancake breakfasts, however, are an exception. Over 100 early-risers enjoyed the taste of authentic pancakes, with real maple syrup that American Society Board members bring in their suitcases when they travel to the USA. The authenticity is in the batter and the flipping. Volunteers, under the coordination of Gerry Eigen and a visiting pancake expert from Florida, flipped hundreds of pancakes for attendees.

USS Carl Vinson Reception in Guanabara Bay
On February 17, 2010 a wonderfully cordial reception on board the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in the harbour of the city of Rio de Janeiro afforded AmSoc Board members a treat to be remembered.
